The Long Way Back is the first volume of The Complete Works of Fouad al-Tikerly. It was first published in 1993 and reprinted in 2002. The story in this book takes place during a significant period of political transformation in Iraq in the mid - 20th century. On July 14, 1958, Abdul Karim Qassem led the "Free Officers Organization" to overthrow the Hashemite monarchy of King Faisal II and established the Republic of Iraq. He served as the first prime minister, defense minister, and commander - in - chief of the armed forces. On February 8, 1963, the Ba'ath Party in Iraq launched a coup, overthrowing Qassem's regime. The next day, Qassem was executed. Against this historical backdrop of Iraqi society during that period, The Long Way Back depicts the miserable lives of the Iraqi people through the experiences of an ordinary family.
