The Story of Zahra is the debut work that brought Hanan al - Shaykh to fame. The story is divided into two parts. The first part depicts Zahra's painful memories of her family during adolescence: her brother's dropping out of school, several strange suitors, an uncle of a different religious sect with whom she can confide, and the gains and losses of taking refuge in Africa. The second part describes her experiences during the civil war: encountering a sniper and how the war has changed human nature. The unexpected pregnancy and miscarriage during a storm at the end of the story seem to be the main thread of Zahra's search for love, as well as the true meaning of life that she has seemingly comprehended.
